Description: I tried to do a couple of things with this video. 1) I wanted it to end where it began. I think the homeless man at the beginning and end of the video illustrates the point that there's an awful lot going on around Sunset besides the surfing. I sometimes lose sight of that, so it's a personal reminder and not social commentary. Just me thinking through my viewfinder. 2) I had a nice talk with a fellow named Earl, who works at Rocker board shop. The man is so knowledgeable and really took the time to educate me about board construction. It really changed the way I surf. Particularly, he showed me where my feet need to be in order to trim, maneuver, pump through a flat section, etc. I think the long boarders I shot have mastered these techniques. 3) I put myself in very briefly using a Hero 3 waterproof wrist camera from ZJs. Too bad it looks terrible after YouTube compresses the footage. 4) The opening and closing scenes feature some ripping by guys on shorter boards. I thought it was a nice way to open and close. Energy at the beginning and energy at the end. 5) I tried to -- when possible -- to link the surfers. For example, at 1:07 a few scenes of one surfer begin. Eventually, he drops in with another guy, who then becomes the focus of the next few scenes. At 00:29 a paddle boarder is seen in the background, so I later include some footage of a paddle boarder, who is eventually blown off a wave on the final surf scene. 6) I love the music for this video. While I hope they never sue the hell out of me for using it, "Transitions" by the Beastie Boys is perfect for a surfing video. Surfing is all about transitions. Outside take off to inside reform; flailing beginner advancing to soul arching local, long board to fun shape to short board; low tide to high then back again. 7) Finally, there's the usual transition shots -- people, animals (alive and dead) that complete the Sunset scene. Whew! I think it will take longer to read this than to watch the video.
