Description:

Major thanks to "Floskate"! In her words: "I have managed to get hold of some very rare footage of this competition which seems to be from a German newsreel. We see many of the competitors in pairs, mens and ladies in this 6 minute clip. Of the ladies shown we see Cecilia Colledge & Sonja Henie among others. The little Japanese girl at the very beginning is Etsuko Inada. She was 12 years old at this competition and was regarded as something of a prodigy - clearly something which the Japanese have excelled at in the decades since. In mens we see the great Karl Shafer doing figures as well as free skating. And pairs we see the top 3 couples including the true pioneers of shadow skating - Maxi Herber and Ernst Beier. This is such a precious glimps at the skating of yesteryear. I really hope you enjoy it!!"

Wow! How rapidly did things change? Here we had Karl Schafer barely managing a single axel (looked a bit cheated as well!) and only 12 years later Dick Button did double axel and 4 yrs after that triple loop. Shows just how far Button took the sport.

Outdoor skating does add new meaning to the term "Shadow Skating"!! cecelia Coleridge invented the camel spin! I had the good fortune to skate on the same ice with her during a dance session at the Skating Club of Boston (about 1997??). This is super terriff!~~~~! I bet there were a few guffaws at all the "Heil Hitlers!"
