Description: In the days when popular pianists used both hands, "Little" Jack Little (1900-1956) had a dance orchestra that was most popular throughout the 1930s. He made his biggest impression with his mellow crooning voice, humorous personality and his flashy and poly-rhythmic piano style. As a composer, he had a sparse, but important catalog of songs (all collaborations) that included "Jealous" (1924), "I'm Needin' You" (1930), "Take A Picture Of The Moon" (1932), "Hold Me" (1933), "You're a Heavenly Thing" (1935) and the unforgettable "In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town" (1932). Although some of his dance records were less than exciting, his novelty piano playing was far more interesting and clever than contemporaries such as Lee Sims or Eddy Duchin. In this 1936 American film clip, he displays his dexterity with "Somebody Stole My Gal" (Leo Wood, 1922) with remarkable variations in each chorus! |
