"Watch the Birdie" is a common phrase in America (like "Say Cheese") - when someone is trying to get you to look into a camera (and smile). I couldn't find the origin of the phrase. I can think of two possible reasons. First, saying the word "Birdie" forces the mouth into a smile. Second, the "flash bars" from the early days of photography resemble a bird's perch. Having your subject "watch the birdie" would get them to look directly into the flash (and toward the lens of the camera).
